You have to have at least an AA degree, but I have a BA and don't get paid any more for it, haha. There are some girls that stand out in my mind, in good ways and bad. It's hard, because you're not supposed to get emotionally attached, but you spend so much time with these people for several months. Some of them I could actually see myself being friends with (of the adult patients), but I have to keep that professional boundary and I can't talk to them at all outside of work for at least two years after they graduate the program. It's weird. I totally know where you're coming from as far as figuring out what to do in life; I'm kinda in the same boat. I just kinda fell into my job and I don't know if I want to stay in the field or not. I'm still young and just dabbling. No rush.
I have some really important duties that affect people's lives, and just my being with these girls for 40 hours a week for two months (adolescents) or six months (adults) has an effect on them, hopefully good, haha. It's awesome going to their coin-outs (kinda like a graduation ceremony) when they complete treatment and hearing back from past patients about how great they're doing and how they're staying clean and making something of their lives without drugs and alcohol. I like being a positive role model for these girls; it's unusual for them to have adults in their lives who don't and have never done drugs and have good heads on their shoulders who can teach them to have sober, responsible fun. The crappiest part of the job is getting up super early every day, haha.
So what do you do? I notice you're working with kids in your default photo. Volunteer work?
I saw the posting on craigslist and it caught my attention. Only since I've worked there have I gotten interested in the field. It's super stressful, and it can be difficult, but I do like it most days.
Amen, lady. This is the first summer I've had to work through. It's kinda sad knowing that unless I become a teacher, I'm not likely to have another summer off for the rest of my life! I like my new shift, hours-wise. At least I get off at a decent hour and I have the same weekend as everyone else (I used to work Tue-Sat, so I had Sun and Mon off). I work at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center for pregnant and parenting women, as well as adolescent girls from 12-18. Living with the boyfriend is good. We're very similar in the way we live, so there's minimal conflict. I'm glad to hear that you're working hard and playing harder. I wish a good show would come around here! The next good one is Slipknot, but it's the same day as a friend's birthday fiesta so I can't go :(
